Microsoft introduced a nice new logo today. I like it. It has the same sort of aesthetic as the colorful but simple NBC logo.
A friend sent a link that contains a short retrospective of MS logos, you can read it here.
The new MS logo is very similar to the logo already over the door of all Microsoft Stores. Note, just like Apple Stores there is no actual brand name above an MS Store (only a logo).
It’s interesting how MS evolved from its historically monochromatic logos to new a colorful logo. Conversely, Apple went from a colorful rainbow logo to a monochromatic one.
BTW, just for grins, I used the Apple corporate font to see how Apple’s chosen font compares to the Microsoft logo font. Apple has been using Adobe’s Myriad font for years now. A screen capture of the comparison is shown below. The real MS logo is on top, and the “Apple font” MS logo is on the bottom. IMHO, aside from the splayed “M” in Myriad and the kerning error in the last two letters — TextEdit.app isn’t sophisticated at typography — the MS logo font looks almost identical to the Apple font. There are a few differences but they’re trivial.
